Holy crap it's been cold this week. Add rain to the mix and it's downright gross. Note to self: Plan to have children in the summer months to increase the odds of having nice party weather!!This weeks guest of honours are Kaitlyn and Jacob who both turned one. I've never met Kaitlyn, but I made a cake for her sister's birthday not to long ago so it seemed only appropriate to make one for her too. Jacob, on the other hand, is the son of two good friends and I definitely couldn't let his first birthday go by with a store bought cake!!
As for design, Kaitlyn's aunt sent me a pic of the party plates being used at their gathering so I drew a few ideas from there to finish her cake which was flavoured chocolate with strawberry buttercream. For Jacob, October has been dubbed "monkey" month (he's being dressed up as a monkey for Halloween and his mom thought that a monkey themed cake would be cute). So here I added the three sock monkey "stooges" and baked up some mint chocolate and caramel cupcakes for this afternoon's party.
As much as these little people are in their prime of learning, this weekend I also had a lesson of my own - that there is a very distinct difference between caramel "sauce" and caramel "spread". AND that I should read labels more carefully!
Happy birthday Kaitlyn and Jacob!
