In the realm of cake I believe there isn't anything worse than having to colour fondant black or red. In fact it's downright painful. Thankfully, two days before I had to make this cake I was informed that my fondant producer now makes pre-mixed black fondant!! AND I could get it locally! I couldn't have been more relieved considering how much black fondant this cake called for.The idea for this cake developed in the process of understanding that its recipient has no real hobbies to speak of, BUT spends A LOT of time glued to his laptop researching everything from the newest gadgets to how to effectively clean a glass top oven. This precious laptop is a DELL model that has for all intents and purposes become a member of the family. SO - it only seemed fitting to include it in his surprise 50th birthday celebration.
In order to get the required number of servings we modeled the bottom layer as a black leather laptop bag. A second cake modeled as his laptop sat on top. Funny enough, this cake display was mistaken for the real thing more than once - a testament to this new fondant that has once again made me love the colour black!
