Under the Sea

Things are beginning to get chaotic in my cake world...not that I'm complaining. It keeps me busy on nights when I'd probably end up spending my time watching useless reality TV. In fact, anything that keeps me away from that is a good thing.

I'm currently on a hiatus...far, far away from my kitchen. But it's just as hot here, and no I'm not on vacation by any means. So with a little time on my hands I thought I'd post an update of a cake I had LOADS of fun making!

Jayna, my friend's daughter, was celebrating her 8th birthday last weekend and the theme of her party was Under the Sea. Apparently Jayna is obsessed with all things waterborne so why would anyone argue a request to host an under the sea party? My friend asked me if I could make the cake and of course I couldn't say no to Jayna so off I went.

I actually used this opportunity to make a first attempt at a topsy-turvy style cake. I have yet to take a course in this method, but I figured how hard could it be? The answer is not very. Yes it takes a bit of skill to figure out the placement and how to create the crooked illusion, but I somehow got it to function without breaking a sweat. Not to say that I'll never take a course in it just to perfect the REAL method, but for now I have an idea of how it works!

Anyways, colourful fish, coral, an octopus, starfish and accompanying sea shells added to the look of this cake along with an edible sea floor. It wasn't until a couple of hours before pick-up that I found out Jayna's favourite sea mammal is the killer whale. Uh-huh. How could I give her a cake without THAT?

So off I went yet again to try to form a killer whale. Ask me how hard it is to place a feature on a completed cake...considering it wasn't supposed to be there in the first place! I eventually found a spot for Shamoo and maybe it's not where I would have put it from the start, but that's where it landed in the end.

Happy birthday Jayna! I'm glad you liked your cake :)
